Meeting Agenda / Report - Sunday February 7, 2010

The first meeting of the year!

Our feature plants for this month is the Scented Leaf. Bring in your scenteds for Show & Tell and the Parlour Show.

Feature :

Jean Hausermann will be speaking about tissue culture and updating us on her efforts in the area. There is more and more tissue cultured plants out there and this will provide us with an opportunity to learn more about the process.

Feature Report:

Jean presented a video on tissue culture. There is a lot of prep that needs to be done especially around maintaining sterile and sanitary conditions. The video outlined how to do tissue culture in your kitchen using readily available tools and outline the steps required. This was contrasted vividly with scenes from a commercial tissue culturing lab which was quite startling to say the least.

The club members found the video to be very informative and Jean shared some of her recent experience with members. Many questions were asked and the suggestion was put forth that we look into the possibility of doing a tissue culture workshop as a club project. Since it would involve some planing and preparation, we are looking at the possibility of doing this as one of next year's project.

Regular Features:

Membership fees will be due.

Our 2010 Project Plants will be handed out.

We don't anticipate our species seeds being received in time for this meeting, but if they are received, we will be distrubing them. This year we plan to give out a special prize for the best seedling grown and will be giving this prize out at the October meeting.

Parlour and Lore Show, Lore and our Show and Tell feature.

2010 Projects Updates

Our project plants for 2010 were not distributed at this meeting as they were not ready. However, they will be available at the March meeting.

Some meeting highlights

parlour show

In spite of being early February, we did have a few plants showing up. The two standards from last year were doing fairly well.

The Kleiner Liebing graft survived its fairly cool conditions quite well. Cutting will be taken from this plant to see whether or not the cutting will revert to its smaller leaf.

The other graft, L'Elegante is growing quite well. Ian inserted two grafts into the stem of Jean Nate. Because the stems of L'Elegante are quite small, the stock was easily able to accommodate both. Both grafts are growing very well.

The concern now is that the weight of the ivy will cause the graft to snap off under the weight unless some kind of support can be found.

Unusual Container Contest

Details of the Unusual Container Contest were revealed. Judging will be at the August meeting.

Just a Container

For those who are not into the unusual (container that is), we will also have a competition for the best container featuring geraniums and/or pelargoniums.

Just Blooms

And finally for those not into containers at all, we will have a bloom contest as well.

The August meeting should be pretty colourful!
